May 24 — The Buddha statue, according to the Theravada doctrine as practiced by the Lao practitioners, is a symbol of focus on the ideal state of refuge as portrayed in Dharma teaching, the Buddha’s comforting reminder of the positive aspect of life in peaceful coexistence with nature and the hope for the end of suffering on earth and hereafter. Therefore, when the Buddha statue was created and installed at the temple sanctuary, the Lao people considered that the Lord Buddha was reborn and that the enlightened Buddha-spirit was present among us.
The traditional faithful practitioners at the LBCN temple adhere to the basic tenets of the Buddha’s Dharma teachings —the Four Noble Truths, which outline the nature of suffering and the path to its cessation. Hence, the dedication of the Buddha statue serves as a symbol of focus on the ideal state of refuge in Dharma teaching. According to Theravada tradition, the Buddha statue represents the wisdom of the wise. It emphasizes the path to enlightenment through practices such as meditation, ethical conduct (Sila), and wisdom (Panya).
The ethical effort has significantly influenced our spiritual and cultural lives and helped us develop our full human potential by understanding the true nature of reality; between birth and death, we age and get sick, and our loved ones die. We face frustration and disappointment, not getting what we want, or encountering what we don’t want.
May the blessing of the great grace of the Dharma teachings by the enlightened one be bestowed upon angels and humans among us all for the sake of true refuge and peace in the World.
